INFORMATION ON MATH PLACEMENT FOR GRADES 6-8
Millstone Middle School
Math Placement
Grade Six
In grade six, we have two options of mathematics instruction. Most students are placed in our grade-level math program, using Reveal Math Program: Course 1, covering a wide range of mathematical topics appropriate for 6th graders. Some students are placed in Pre-Algebra and use Glencoe’s Pre-Algebra Program, providing an introduction to the language and usage of algebraic concepts.
In an effort to place each student at a level that ensures both success and challenge, we look carefully at the following measures:
- Overall grade in mathematics
- End-of-Year math assessment
- Advanced problem-solving test
- Renzulli-Hartman Scale
A student’s performance on each of the measures is assigned a point value according to the tables provided below. Students who score 16-25 points are placed in the Pre-Algebra Program. Students who score below 16 points participate in the Math Connects Program: Course 1, with enrichment as needed.
Math Placement is not an exact science. Nevertheless, the score threshold we have established has proven to be a reliable predictor of success. Should you have any questions about the placement of your, please feel free to contact Mr. Anthony Giaconia, Millstone Middle School Principal, at [email protected].
Thank you for your interest in our math placement process and in the education of your child.

Grade Seven
In grade seven, we have three options of mathematics instruction. Most students are placed in our grade-level math program, using Reveal Math Program: Course 2. Some students have the option of completing our Algebra I program over a two-year period in our Algebra 1a and Algebra 1b cycle. We also have a select group of students who are placed in our one-year Algebra 1 program as seventh graders. Both Algebra groups utilize McGraw Hill Algebra 1 Program.
In an effort to place each student at a level that ensures both success and challenge, we look carefully at the following measures:
A student’s performance on each of the measures is assigned a point value according to the tables provided below with the maximum possible score points accrued equaling 20. Any students scoring 18 or above on the rubric are provided the option of completing their Algebra I program over the course of one full year. Students who score 14-17 points are afforded the option to complete their Algebra I program over the course of two years. Students who score below 14 points participate in the Reveal Math Program: Course 2, with enrichment as needed.
Math placement is not an exact science. Nevertheless, the score threshold we have established has proven to be a reliable predictor of success. Should you have have any questions about the placement of your student, please feel free to contact Dr. Trisha Bogusz, Millstone Middle School Principal, at [email protected].
