The Primary School Enrichment
Eligibility
As soon as a child enters the Primary School, they are closely monitored throughout their K-2 years. Mrs. Levinson works with classroom teachers to watch for exceptional abilities and high scores on important standardized assessments. If a child appears to need more of a challenge than the regular curriculum can provide, a series of observations, interviews, and data review begins. Based on data collected, your child may be recommended for pull-out enrichment services for first and/or second grade.
In-Class Support
For all students, as needed
Open communication between Mrs. Levinson and classroom teachers will ensure that the needs of our most advanced young learners are being met throughout their school day. Although Mrs. Levinson is only at the Primary School once per week, she will strive to continuously provide resources, support, and ideas that will help facilitate differentiation at the highest levels within the regular classroom. When in the building, Mrs. Levinson will meet with students and teachers as needed to discuss ways to keep them challenged and engaged every day.
Enrichment Opportunities
For identified students
In the Primary School, identified students will meet with Mrs. Levinson in small groups during a regularly scheduled weekly enrichment period. These classes provide opportunities for our first and second graders to work cooperatively with their intellectual peers, explore new topics, hone their problem-solving skills, develop their creativity, and try out ways to approach their learning experiences through a more advanced lens of depth and complexity. Students are continuously encouraged to think critically and challenge themselves.
Preparing for the Elementary Gifted & Talented Program
All students will be assessed again towards the end of their second grade year for formal identification. Students will be given the CogAT, a nationally recognized cognitive abilities test. All second grade parents will be notified before CogAT testing begins in the spring. The results from this data, along with additional criteria laid out in our identification matrix, are used to identify students for pull-out services throughout their Elementary School years. A letter will be sent home at the end of the school year to invite identified students to the Gifted & Talented Program.
Some students who have been in the pull-out program in the Primary School may not be eligible for the Elementary Gifted & Talented Program, while others that did not meet eligibility previously may join the program in third grade. Our identification process is carefully designed to ensure that students are receiving the right services as their needs change and develop.
Students who do not qualify for pull-out services at the Elementary School will still have opportunities for new and challenging experiences along our continuum of services. Mrs. Levinson continues to work closely with classroom teachers to ensure students have opportunities to grow throughout their school day. Motivated students may also participate in a variety of Enrichment Clubs, special projects, Word of the Week, and Brain Buster challenges.
