What is the CogAT?
CogAT (Cognitive Abilities Testing)
The Millstone Township School District administers the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) to rising third grade students during the spring of their second grade year. For accuracy and fairness, the test cannot be taken more than once in a three year period.
The CogAT evaluates the level and pattern of cognitive development of students, as well as their abilities in problem solving using verbal, quantitative, and spatial (nonverbal) reasoning. The general abilities measured by this assessment reflect the overall efficiency of cognitive processes and strategies which enable an individual to learn new tasks or solve problems. The CogAT measures developed abilities which begin at birth and continue through early adulthood.
Scores can be used to adapt instruction in ways that enhance the student’s success in learning. Data gathered from these assessments will be included as one important aspect of the multiple measures which help the staff make decisions regarding your child’s instructional needs. The CogAT will also be included as one of the measures used to determine levels of student participation in our gifted programming during their elementary school years.
